Hi everyone,
OK, let's rally the troop! I'm forwarding the latest e-mail from Jake
Schoenleb's father. Many of you have asked, what can I do to help this
family?
Here are a few ideas:
- send a card to Jake at the hospital, maybe we can make sure he gets
at least one every day from us?
- volunteer to help tend to the family's lawn, Donna Baldwin is keeping
a schedule of volunteers. This is the last thing his parents need to
worry about right now.
- visit Jake on your own or with friends
- pray, of course.
BUT, here's a fun idea that we can all get involved in....
I just spoke with Jake's mom and I think it's time for a party to lift
Jake's spirits....everyone with me?
Jake can eat whatever he wants according to his Mom so I think we should
get together and have a pizza party in Jake's hospital room tomorrow
night. Boys and pizza just go together naturally!
I'd like to be at the hospital around 6 so it would be Jake's dinner and
also because I would imagine he gets tired early. His favorite soda is
Pepsi so we'll have plenty of that also. Donna Baldwin has offered to
make a dessert, but depending on the number of boys we could probably
use a second dessert also!
I'll drive and Donna has also volunteered. Let me know if you'd like to
be included, the more the merrier! If we have a lot we'll need
additional drivers also. Depending on what we need to do maybe we could
meet at the scout house. He is at Medical City by the way.
Maybe the boys can think of some fun things to entertain Jake while
we're there...card tricks, fun stories, who knows!
This is the essence of scouting and life in general, helping others when
they are in need.
By the grace of God, I have four healthy boys and my heart goes out to
the Schoenleb's as I know all of yours do as well. Maybe a night of fun
will bring some much needed healing to Jake!
Let me know by e-mail or call me at 214/336-3162.
Thanks!
Carol Garza

Subject: Jake Schoenleb Update
About 1 1/2 hours ago Jake was going to the bathroom and said he felt he
like he had strained something and wanted to know if he had an air leak.
So I go and get the nurse and sure enough he does,, which is a very bad
thing. So the nurse calls the doctor's and the doctor orders x-rays so
he can compare them to this mornings x-rays to see if Jake has opened up
a hole in his lung. As I walked out the room for just a second I want to
bang my head into the wall and tell the nurse standing next to me we
have been here 12 days, when do we get break. I just want to scream but
can't and have to turn right back around and go try to cheer up Jake and
make sure he is ok and can't allow him to get down or depressed.
I talk to Jake along with the head nurse to understand what happened to
make him think he had a air leak and he can't tell us other than he
thought he had stained something. I guess the good news is he is really
in touch with his body and how really knows how it should feel and not
feel by now He tells the head nurse he wants to know what the doctor
thinks because he is not going to sleep until he knows. The head nurse
in the mean time grabs some tape and retapes the area around his right
chest tube and puts him back on the monitors so they can watch and
monitors his heart rate and breathing at the nurses station. That really
helps cheer him up.
What has Jake so depressed and dad wanting to slam his head into the
steel door frame is that if he has a leak we have no choice but to open
him up again on the right side and try to seal the leak, which means at
least another 8 to 10 days before we can even think about his left lung.
It also means it's the 3rd surgery on the right lung in 45 days.
The good news came in just a little while ago that x-ray came back
looking the same as this morning, which is very good news.
Jake fell a sleep a couple of minutes ago and is snoring so at 1:45 in
the morning he's sounding like Pedro at a boy scout camp out. For all
you non scout parents, Pedro is the adult patrol and the key to getting
any sleep on a camp out is to get to sleep before the rest of Pedro
falls asleep other wise your going to hear a harmony of distinctive
sounds that some times roll together and sometimes not trust me your
going to differently hear a few logs on the fire. :-)
We don't know when the next surgery is going to be due to his right
lung. If in the morning if the right lung is deemed ok and not leaking
air, they will most likely water seal him but given what has gone on
tonight we might wait another day. After they water seal him for 24
hours, they will dry seal him for another 24 hours, and then depending
on how he is and the x-ray look we can then proceed to left lung. If
the right lung is leaking we would go back in either late tomorrow or
Thursday to look one more time what is going on. Our biggest fear is
that we have to cut him open and pull his ribs back to look at the lung
which means were here into July and Jake will never be the same.
I'm to tired to get up and bang my head against the steel door frame but
realize that even when we think we know we don't know anything. We
remain strong and at peace with what God is allowing to happen even
though we don't understand why. We are grateful we are here at the
hospital and in a place that can and will eventually fix the problem
and Praise God even in the bad times because we understand this suffer
is part of our hell in living in a broken world full of sin. God is
great all the time and in control so we are just begging Him to help
Jake heal and have peace through out the whole process.
Thank you for your prayers and we really appreciate all the trips many
of you have made to the hospital to see Jake, which we know is not easy.
I feel like we have overstayed our welcome. Thank you for your
continued prayers
Bill
